Founder of Wizzard Worms | Honouring Don Blacklaw’s Legacy
Our Founder: Don Blacklaw
Pioneer of Sustainable Vermiculture in South Africa
Don Blacklaw was the visionary founder of Wizzard Worms (thewiz@wizzadworms.co.za) and a passionate advocate for sustainable living. Through his life’s work, he championed the transformation of organic waste into valuable resources using the power of earthworms — long before composting became a global movement.
Based on his research and practice at a smallholding in Rietvlei near Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal, Don developed a simple yet highly effective system that turned food and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost and liquid fertiliser — now known affectionately as "Wondrous Wee." His methods proved revolutionary, enhancing soil fertility and promoting organic gardening across homes, schools, community gardens, hotels, and even commercial farms throughout South Africa.
Don’s legacy lives on in every worm farm we build and every garden made greener by his innovations. His commitment to environmental stewardship, education, and community upliftment remains the foundation of Wizzard Worms' values today.
A Lasting Impact
From introducing children to the wonders of composting at Waldorf School to transforming hotel gardens in the Drakensberg, Don’s inventions have touched countless lives. His guidance and solutions continue to inspire gardeners, eco-conscious households, and sustainable businesses nationwide.
“Worms for food, not fish bait,” Don once said. “We’re not just recycling waste — we’re generating wealth from it.”
We honour his life’s mission by continuing to develop, supply, and support the worm farms he created, ensuring that his love for the environment and belief in better soil lives on in every bag of compost and every drop of worm tea.
